Artist’s statement
My inspiration to make this mask came from a time in my childhood when I lived in Madagascar. Living there, I became fascinated by the different shells and sea creatures I saw.
I found them to be fitting shapes for a mask, because shells serve as a protective covering for sea creatures, in the same way a mask now helps protect humans from contracting Covid-19 and other illnesses.
The deep blue color of the mask is a reference to the sea. Made from clay and fitting on the face, this prototype can be fabricated from other materials for use as a fun yet functional mask.
